What is Aseptic Packaging ?

It means filling a sterilized package with a sterile product under a confined hygienic environment.

In the aseptic packaging process, the product passes from the UHT (Ultra High Temperature) treatment in a closed system to the packaging machine. There it is packed under aseptic conditions in a packaging material, which is sterile and keeps out light & air.

Aseptic technology keeps food safe, fresh and flavorful for certain months without refrigeration or preservatives.

ASEPTIC TECHNOLOGY

Aseptic technology keeps the food safe & fresh for a longer period of time without any refrigeration or preservatives. It allows product to retain more color, texture, taste & nutrition. In addition to improved product quality, aseptic packaging offers a variety of package shapes, consumer convenience and economics in energy & packaging materials.

The aseptic process is based on the principle of ensuring that both food & packaging material are free from harmful bacteria at the moment the product is filled & packed.

Packaging Principle:

Roll fed packaging material is sterilized & shaped into a tube. The tube is filled with the product and the desired packages are shaped and sealed below the surface of the liquid leaving no air space in the package.

Sterilization of the packaging material is made in a bath of hydrogen peroxide. Any residue is removed with heat. This leaves the packaging material completely dry and creates a sterile atmosphere in the filling section.

Aseptic cartons are made of three basic materials that together result in a very efficient, safe and light-weight package. Each material/layer of is meant to provide specific function.

Packaging Material:

• Paper (75%) to provide strength & stiffness
• Polyethylene (20%) to make packages liquid tight & to provide a barrier to micro-organisms
• Aluminum foil (5%) to keep out air, light and off-flavors all the things that can deteriote
• Combining each of the above layers, the packaging material is produced with optimal properties and excellent performance characteristics as under
• Higher degree of safety, hygiene and nutrient in foods
• Preserving taste & freshness
• Can be kept for months without refrigeration or preservatives
• Efficient product & good example of resource efficiency (A filled package is 97% with product & 3% with packaging material)
• Light weight amongst the lightest packages.
